All hype. I finally caught Django last night, after driving to the Grove where there were only front row seats left, then ended up fleeing up to Citywalk for some good seats. By the way, what a trip Citywalk has become – I imagine purgatory being something like it. Back to Django, there’s never been more obvious proof that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are star fuckers. How this film got nominated for 5 Golden Globes, especially for best film, is baffling. How it tied “Argo” for number of nominations, even more baffling. The film starts out amazing, had the typical Tarantino flair. But in my mind, started to fizzle once Leo DiCaprio, playing plantation owner Calvin Candie, entered the picture. I love Leo as an actor, I didn’t dig his performance here. All of his dialogue almost seemed to be filler, leading up to his eventual demise. And of course, the topic of the word ‘nigger’ and it’s abundant use. Some argue it’s merely reflecting history, others may differ. But when Candie breaks out into his diatribe basically saying a slave is dumber and uses a slave skull to illustrate his point, you can’t help but to shake your head. For me, the bright spots were the performances by Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel Jackson, and of course the music supervision where Tarantino is always on point with. My recommendation? Wait for rental or cable.
